Anxiety Disorder

What is Anxiety Disorder?

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S., affecting 40 million adults in the United States age 18 and older, or 18% of the population.  They are highly treatable, yet only about one-third of those suffering receive treatment.  It’s not uncommon for someone with an anxiety disorder to also suffer from depression or vice versa. Nearly one-half of those diagnosed with depression are also diagnosed with an anxiety disorder.

Symptoms

Patients with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) may have symptoms vary depending on the type of disorder, but symptoms include: Feelings of panic, fear, and uneasiness, problems sleeping, cold or sweaty hands, shortness of breath, heart palpitations, an inability to be still and calm, numbness/tingling in hands or feet and dry mouth.

Treatment

Anxiety is treated with psychotherapy and medications.  Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) therapy has lately been used to treat generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder and social anxiety.

TMS to Treat Anxiety Disorder

Recent studies show significant improvement in Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and GAD symptoms when treated with TMS.  Stimulation of the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, especially at high frequencies, has been reported to reduce anxiety symptoms in posttraumatic stress disorder and panic disorder.
